The factory cost BRL15m (US$2.7m) and covers 5,000 square metres. Expansion is possible when needed.

The plant has capacity for 18,000 battery modules per year, and it was expected to deliver 1,000 in its first month.

"With our investment, we will also be able to [supply] companies interested in enhancing the electrification of their equipment," said Tyler Li, country manager for BYD Brazil.

The factory is automated and robotic.

BYD opened its first Brazil plant in 2015 to produce electric bus chassis in Campinas, Sao Paulo state.

In April 2017, it opened a plant for photovoltaic modules.
