Toyota has celebrated the 10th anniversary of the launch of its Prius Hybrid in Europe by selling its 200,000th model in the region.

The landmark comes just two years after the 100,000th Prius was sold in Europe following launch of the vehicle in 2000.

Japanese domestic market sales started in 1997 and first exports began three years later.

The company said global sales of Prius were expected to exceed 2m units by this autumn.

The first generation Prius became the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle available in Europe in 2000. Over the past decade, the number of European countries in which it is sold has increased from 13 to 38.
