The automotive sector in Brazil continues to show a strong performance this year according to preliminary sales figures reported by Gazeta Mercantil.

Preliminary numbers indicate the tagging of 1.095 million new automobiles and light commercial vehicles in the first five months of this year, up 30.3% over the same period of 2007, the newspaper says.


Through May 29, the sale of 1.079 million vehicles was recorded in the country, and sector analysts believe that 15,000 more entered the National Automotive Vehicles Registry (Renavam) on May 30, Gazeta Mercantil said.


Fiat continues to head the sales ranking in the first five months of the year. By May 29, the Italian automaker had tagged 270,301 automobiles and light commercial vehicles, giving it a 25% market share. In second position is Volkswagen, with 236,498 units (21.9%), followed by General Motors, with 231,188 (21.4%) and Ford, with 100,714 (9.3%), the report said.
