Brazilian vehicle production in March reached a new record level according to AutoData, citing data from trade association Anfavea.

Production reached 230,800 units, up 1.8% on a year earlier. 216,900 units were passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, up 1.8%, and 10,174 units were heavy trucks down 4.4%. Bus production was 3,672 units, up 17%.


Year-to-date vehicle production is up 7.8% to 631,700 units, with light vehicles up 8.9% to 550,000 units. Truck production in the quarter fell 12.3% to 27,526 units, while bus production increased 5.7% to 8,169.


Anfavea is forecasting full year production of 2.574m units, up 4.5% on 2005.


Production was boosted by strong domestic sales, which were up 12.6% in the first quarter to 417,600 units. Anfavea is forecasting domestic sales of 1.8m vehicles this year, up 7% on 2005.
