Sales in the first nine months of the year were comparable to the same period last year, said Anfavea which is forecasting a modest 1-2% growth in sales this year to around 3.88m.
The association is also sticking to its forecast of growth of around 5% a year to reach sales of 4.7m by 2017.
September’s slide was attributed to fewer working days in the month compared to August.
Fiat was again the best-selling brand in September with sales of 63,000 vehicles ahead of VW (57,000), GM (51,000) and Ford (28,000).
