Volkswagen, Ford and Mercedes-Benz asked the Brazilian courts on Thursday to intervene in a major car workers’ strike at their factories in Sao Bernardo do Campo outside Sao Paulo, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

The report said that, although car makers in Brazil are enduring their worst sales slump in a decade, nearly 25,000 workers walked off the job on Tuesday to demand a bigger annual raise than the 15.7% their employers had offered – they want a wage hike that beats Brazil’s 12-month inflation rate, currently running at more than 15%.
Dow Jones said the three car makers turned to the courts on Thursday after workers voted to extend the strike, which has shut down production at Volkswagen and slowed output at Ford and Mercedes.
Meantime, Dow Jones said, workers at a Scania AB plant that was also shut down by the strike were back on the job on Thursday afternoon, after Scania agreed to hike wages by 18% – output at the plant was expected to be back to normal on Friday morning.
