Hyundai has taken the final steps needed and attended a public hearing by the city council of Piracicaba (112 miles northwest of São Paulo) for the environmental license for its first company-owned plant in Brazil. Construction is due to start in April.

The project to build 150,000 units yearly after an investment of US$750m is quite separate from Brazilian group CAOA’s plant in Anápolis, state of Goiás (100 miles southwest of Brasília), which already produces the HR light truck and as of last month, the Tucson SUV. CAOA expects to sell over 3,000 locally-built Tucsons each month, as well as importing the ix-35.
