Sales in Brazil of flex-fuel vehicles that run on any combination of ethanol or petrol reached a milestone on Thursday, hitting the two million mark, the National Automakers’ Association said.

Since their launch in March 2003, flex-fuel vehicles have become hugely popular in Brazil because they allow motorists to choose the cheapest option at the fuel pump, Reuters noted.
Flex-fuel autos represent 77% of all new-car sales in Brazil at the end of July, up from about 30% just over a year ago. Many industry executives predict Brazil’s auto market will eventually be dominated by flex-fuel cars, the report said.
Volkswagen’s Brazilian unit, which was the first to launch a flex-fuel model in Brazil, is already moving in that direction. It said earlier this year that it will no longer make petrol-only cars, offering instead an all flex-fuel line-up.
In Brazil, the world’s largest sugar producer, ethanol is distilled from sugar cane, Reuters added.
