Brazilian metalworkers in the Sao Paulo area have rejected an offer by automakers to increase wages 7% and approved plans to strike as soon as Wednesday (15 September, the union said.

The union, which represents about 40,000 metalworkers in the auto industry, said on its website it is seeking an increase of at least 10%, Dow Jones reported. According to Brazilian law, the workers had to wait two days to begin striking after registering the vote with authorities on Monday.
The union will meet again on Wednesday to decide if it will go ahead with the strike, according to SMABC’s website. The union justified its demand saying this has been a record year for vehicle sales.
Vehicle sales will likely rise 10% this year, to 3.4m, according to estimates by the automakers association Anfavea.
In the first eight months of this year, local auto makers sold 2.194m vehicles, up 10.1% year on year.
