Bosch is creating its own proprietary cloud facilities. Announced at its annual Connected World event in Berlin, the German manufacturer will enhance its sensor, software and services portfolio by bringing storage and processing of the data collected in-house.

Based in Germany, the ‘Bosch IoT Cloud’ will initially support internal projects, while the company stabilises the service into a mature product. Once confident that the service is competitive, Bosch will make the service available to other companies and customers.

Dr Rainer Kallenbach told just-auto that the initial rollout of the hardware will not see acres and acres of storage facilities take over the area selected near Stuttgart. “We just need a enough computing power. It’s not a consumer market right now but we are preparing for it. We first stay in Germany and then roll it out worldwide.”

Amid concerns about expertise and security, Dr Volkmar Denner told just-auto that Bosch had planned this in minute detail and had no concerns about its ability to deliver. “Years ago when no one was talking about this, Bosch recognised that this would be an issue. We created a Centre Of Competence for all employees to establish standards for the whole company. We purchased Escrypt (in 2012) – they are specialising in encryption. It is important to understand, we are not just talking. We are really in the details.”

Dr Denner went on to describe the hardware security for a semiconductor microcontroller to demonstrate the end-to-end approach of its security focus. When challenged on the market penetration to really make the service profitable, Denner commented, “When you do calculations for vehicle applications, you need just 5-10% penetration to get these functionalities.”

Across all four of its industry sectors – automotive, manufacturing, home equipment and energy – the company plans to make the cloud platform available to customers from 2017.
