British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has met representatives from UK and global companies in the automotive industry to discuss electrification of the sector.

The UK Premier highlighted Britain’s commitment to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, with growing numbers of EVs coming on the market and more chargepoints being made available across the country

The participants discussed how to accelerate the process, support the industry with the transition to a cleaner future including battery technology and build public confidence further in charging infrastructure. They also spoke about creating and supporting jobs, as well as reskilling the automotive workforce.

New funding commitments made in the government’s Net Zero Strategy include an extra GBP350m (US$482m) to support electrification of UK vehicles and their supply chains, as part of a GBP1bn commitment. Also, a further GBP620m for EV grants and infrastructure has been set out, with a focus on local on-street residential charge points. This brings total investment in EV grants and infrastructure to GBP2.5bn since the 2020 Spending Review.

Plans to put thousands more zero-emission cars and vans onto UK roads through a zero-emission vehicle mandate, were also confirmed.
