BMW is committed to completing construction of a new CNY4.4bn (US$621m) main factory building in Shenyang this year, according to Chinese media reports citing local government officials.

The investment is part of a larger, CNY28bn programme being undertaken in the capital city of China's north eastern province of Liaoning by BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA), BMW Group's 50% owned joint venture company in China with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings.

Construction of the entire factory complex is scheduled to be completed by 2022 which will make Shenyang a key global manufacturing centre for the German automaker.

China has become BMW's largest single market worldwide with sales in excess of 720,000 vehicles last year and with cumulative sales of 3m units at the end of February 2020.

The BBA joint venture has invested CNY52bn in Shenyang since it was established in 2003 in two vehicle assembly plants, one powertrain plant and an R&D centre.
