BMW's car production at its main production line at a plant in China has come to a halt after Bosch became unable to supply steering parts.

A BMW spokeswoman told the Nikkei Asian Review that the main assembly line at the company's Tiexi plant in Shenyang will remain halted for the entire week.

The report also said it is not known when production on the line can resume.

"Our supplier, Bosch, is not currently able to provide us with a sufficient number of steering gears for the BMW 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series," the spokeswoman told Nikkei.

BMW's Tiexi plant, which opened in Shenyang in 2012, builds the 1, 2 and 3 series and the X1 (including a plug-in hybrid version). Tailor-made for the China market, long-wheeled versions of the 3 series and X1 are also produced there. Tiexi produces around 200,000 cars a year.

Tiexi's X1 and the 5 series which is made at BMW's Dadong plant, also in Shenyang, will be unaffected, the report said.

BMW has confirmed that Bosch is unable to provide sufficient volumes of steering parts, due to problems at an unnamed sub-supplier of gear casings in Italy. BMW will seek compensation from Bosch for the financial impact of the supply disruption.

China is BMW's largest market and a shortage of finished vehicles ready for sale threatens to hit its market share and dent its bottom line.
