BlackBerry’s division QNX and software tools manufacturer Vector Informatik have entered into a strategic alliance to create a foundational vehicle software platform.

This next-generation solution aims to expedite the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and simplify the integration of automotive software.

The collaboration leverages Vector’s safe middleware technology and QNX’s safety-certified operating system to provide a robust core for application development across vehicle electronic control units (ECUs).

Vector president & managing director Matthias Traub said: “This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our mission to advance the frontier of automotive software engineering.

“Together with QNX, we are co-developing a foundational platform that delivers best-in-class performance, combining openness, safety, and scalability. It empowers the entire ecosystem—from OEMs to developers—to build the next generation of intelligent vehicles.”

An early access version of the platform will be available to select partners later this year, with a fully certified release scheduled for the end of 2026.

The platform is designed to be lightweight, scalable, and aligned with industry standards, which will assist original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in reducing redundant software development.

This initiative marks a shift from the traditional automotive value chain to a dynamic value network, encouraging open collaboration and compatibility with key industry standards.

QNX product, engineering and services chief operating officer and head John Wall said: “The automotive industry is at a tipping point, where software complexity threatens to outpace innovation.

“By joining forces with Vector, we’re delivering a foundational platform that seeks to remove significant friction from the development process and empower OEMs to focus on what truly matters—creating transformative driving experiences for their customers. This is about building smarter, safer vehicles, faster.”

The foundational vehicle software platform will help OEMs in accelerating the transition from research to production, while supporting the deployment of SDVs on the roads more swiftly.

The platform’s alignment with the highest functional safety and cybersecurity standards ensures reliability and security for the automotive industry.

The platform can be extended to include TTTech Auto’s MotionWise Schedule, providing additional flexibility in scheduling platform components and applications.

QNX recently announced that its Software Development Platform (SDP) 8.0 will serve as the foundational operating system for the Eclipse Foundation’s Safe Open Vehicle Core (S-CORE) Project.
