Toyota sold a record 260,508 units in the first quarter of 2004, an increase of 23% over Q1 2003. The firm’s European market share for the first quarter reached 5.4%, up from 4.6 % last year, and monthly sales exceeded 100,000 for the first time, reaching 105,506 units in March – up 20% over the same month a year ago.
 
Corolla sales (56,594 units) rose 20% year on year in the quarter  while redesigned Avensis sales soared 157% to 42,402 units and Yaris sales climbed 18% to 68,347 units. Sales of the just-redesigned hybrid Prius leaped 668% to 2,088 units. Lexus sales for the first quarter climbed 49% to 6,710 units.

In the first quarter of 2004, Italy was Toyota’s largest market in Europe, with 41,211 units sold (+11%), followed by the UK (41,028 units), Germany (30,109 units), France (20,289 units) and Spain (14,887 units). Russia enjoyed the most spectacular growth (+136%) for the first quarter, with 8,950 sales.
