According to DPA news, Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen’s works council, confirmed yesterday that discussions today between management and unions would consider building the A1 from 2009, after Golf production ceases when the next generation model goes into production in 2007.

Osterloh also said that there would be solidarity between European unions to ensure that plants are not forced to compete with one another for new models. The European metalworkers union (EMB) threatened Europe-wide demonstrations on 2nd December.

Workers in Brussels have been taking action this week with many not returning to work since before the weekend when Volkswagen first confirmed that the next generation Golf would not be built at the plant.

Annual production volumes of the A1 model could be 70,000 to 100,000 units. Current Golf capacity in Brussels is around 250,000 units.

Industry sources says the new compact car will be an extremely sporty small car including all-wheel drive, possibly positioned against the New Mini.
