Workers at Volkswagen’s Brussels plant staged a 24-hour strike on Friday to protest against the Belgian government’s plans to raise the early retirement age.

According to Reuters, the strike was in response to a call by the country’s metal workers union to stop work for a day, though other parts of the country had not reported major disruptions.
The plant’s management reportedly deplored the strike, saying a political issue at the national level should not impinge on the daily operations of the plant.
“The mother company in Germany is closely monitoring the developments at VW Brussels,” it said in a statement cited by Reuters.
According to the report, management did not say whether the strike would hurt operations, and officials were not immediately available for comment.
Reuters noted that the plant, which has 5,700 staff, has often been cited as a potential candidate for closure – it made 185,000 vehicles last year, including the VW Golf and Lupo models and the Audi A3.
