European commercial vehicle registrations continued to rise in July and August, according to the latest data compiled from the European vehicle manufacturers’ trade association ACEA.

Demand for new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) up to 3.5t was up 7.7% during the first eight months of the year. Western Europe registrations (+6.5%) were boosted by growth in the main markets ranging from +0.8% in Spain to +12.6% in Germany. Within the EU15, only Denmark (–0.5%) and Greece (–2.2%) saw falls. All the new member states in eastern Europe recorded positive growth for a cumulative rise of 24.5%.
With 22,874 new heavy trucks over 16t registered in August, European markets were up 22.3%. This brought registrations in the first eight months to +7.6% year on year. The UK is still in decline with demand in the eight-month period down 25.1%. Despite this, western Europe was up 2.6%, thanks to strong growth in Spain (+15.9%) and Germany (+6.1%). Registrations in new member states were up 56.9%.
In the January to August period, sales of new commercial vehicles over 3.5t totaled 282,377 units, an increase of 5.3%. Of these 204,979 were heavy trucks over 16t (+7.6%).
22,141 buses and coaches have been registered in Europe in the first eight months of the year, a 4.9% fall year on year. The decline has slowed in recent months as a result of an upturn in sales in the new member states. Sales there were up 3.4% by August, while western Europe saw a decline of 5.6%.
