The Belarus government is to consider opening several more plants in Belarus for the assembly of foreign cars, Valery Milenki, deputy head of the Transtekhnika Belarusian Research and Development Institute of Transport, said in an interview with BelaPAN.

He said that Prime Minister Syarhey Sidorski had “orally” ordered the ministries to study the matter.
The projects will require foreign investment and there are plans to engage China, which had a fast-developing auto industry, in the projects, Mr. Milenki said.
When asked whether the government considered putting a time limit on the operation of imported second-hand vehicles, he said that the issue might be put on the agenda only after the opening of more car assembly plants in the country, adding that the limit, if any, would apply only to the models to be made in Belarus.
Belarus has a plant assembling Iran’s Samand cars that opened in 2006. The company is projected to make up to 6,000 cars this year.
