Volkswagen will assemble and sell electric cars in China by 2014 according to German reports.

Citing VW CEO Martin Winterkorn, the reports also note the German automaker’s intention to play a leading role in the Chinese car market by 2018.

German media also say Volkswagen is due to showcase an electric model of its Golf brand next week at Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

The Chinese government will start an electric vehicle funding initiative this July, while charging stations are due to be established within a few years.

VW is thought to be investing more than EUR4bn (US$5.3bn) in China.
