Toyota Australia is adding a hybrid-electric version to its updated C-HR SUV range along with the new multimedia system with smartphone mirroring already seen in other markets.

The C-HR becomes the eighth Toyota model in Australia to offer a hybrid-electric powertrain – in top specification, 2WD form only.

In Australian tune, the 1.8-litre system delivers combined output of 90kW and fuel consumption of 4.3 litres/100km. A more powerful two-litre alternative is also now available in some markets.

The 1.2-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine alternative – now dropped from the UK range – continues with manual, automatic and 4WD options.

Multimedia now has an eight-inch touchscreen (was 6.1-inch) and full smartphone integration including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Toyota Australia sales and marketing chief Sean Hanley said C-HR had achieved higher sales this year, challenging the market trend, due to its ability to attract new customers.

"We are expanding the C-HR range with Toyota's hybrid-electric technology because it is an increasingly popular choice among consumers due to its strong performance, great fuel economy and proven reliability," Hanley said.

Hanley claimed Toyota has built at least 90% of the electrified vehicles on Australian roads.

"It took almost 18 years – until April this year – for Toyota to sell a total of 100,000 hybrid-electric vehicles in Australia. Yet, this year alone, we will sell around 25,000 hybrid-electric vehicles, or close to 15% of our total sales.

"Hybrid demand is running at close to 40% for Corolla and RAV4, and above 50% for Camry. We anticipate similar success for the new C-HR hybrid."
