Australian new vehicle sales rose 7.6% year on year to 85,117 units in April, according to official VFACTS data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).
The top five selling vehicles for April were the Toyota Corolla (3,504 units), the Toyota Hilux (2,932), Mazda 3 (2,842), (General Motors) Holden Cruze (2,290) and Hyundai i30 (2,150). Four of the top 10 selling vehicles in April were light commercial vehicles while five were small passenger vehicles. Only two were locally produced.

Year to date sales were up 5.6% to 358,165 units.
Passenger vehicles accounted for 50.3% of sales, SUVs 28.6% and light commercial vehicles 18.2%.
In March, 97,400 new passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were sold with year to date volume up 5% to 273,048 vehicles. March 2013 sales slipped by 216 vehicles versus March 2012.
FCAI noted strong sales of small SUVs in March with monthly sales of 7,541 up 41.3% year on year.
Sales of passenger vehicles continued to decline as a percentage of total sales, with year to date sales accounting for 49.1% of volume compared to 53.7% the same time in 2012.
Private purchases of diesel light commercial vehicles continued to show strong growth with sales increasing by 77.8% (6,263 vehicles) year on year.
