The new models are larger overall, restyled and have new power trains, new suspension and a wider choice of body/powertrain/equipment grade combinations.
The first all-new HiLux range since 1997 includes three new double overhead camshaft multi-valve engines.
Two new engines – an all-alloy VVT-i equipped quad cam V6 petrol engine and a twin cam turbocharged Electronic Direct Injection (EDI) diesel – are offered with both two- and four-wheel drive.
The four-litre engine is the first six-cylinder engine offered in a two-wheel drive HiLux. In Australian specification, it delivers 175kW of power at 5,200rpm and 376Nm of torque at 3,800rpm coupled to an automatic transmission.
In Australia, the new turbodiesel engine can be matched to an automatic transmission in a four-wheel drive Hilux for the first time.
It delivers 120kW of power at 3,400rpm and 343Nm of torque from 1,400 to 3,200rpm, and can be matched to a five-speed manual or electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.
The entry-level two-wheel drive version has a new 2.7-litre VVT-i petrol engine with 118kW of power and offers the choice of single or double cabs.
A wider track and new double-wishbone coil-spring front suspension are said to have improved the truck line’s active safety, ride comfort, handling and stability.
Passive safety levels are claimed to have been raised by new body and chassis designs and new safety equipment – all models have dual airbags.
ABS anti-skid brakes are standard equipment on high-grade models and optionally available on volume-selling versions.
