The Nissan Leaf EV is now launching in Australia and sales of the car are being steadily extended to Nissan markets around the world.

It is probably fair to say that the Nissan Leaf did not exactly get off to a flying start in sales terms last year. There were mitigating factors, but Carlos Ghosn must be a little concerned that selling EVs at the prevailing price points may be more difficult than Renault-Nissan has assumed.

‘First mover advantage’ may take longer to realise than Renault-Nissan had planned on. In Europe, sales of the just coming to market small electric car Renault ZOE with its lower price point will be watched closely.

Next year, production of a Leaf variant moves to Europe (Sunderland). That will help to offset high yen sourcing issues and Nissan will be hoping to build momentum for the Leaf and EVs.
