He was taking part in the Targa West rally in Western Australia and driving with colleague Mick Hone in a Daytona Coupe when the incident occurred. West Australian police say the car crashed into a tree at Gidgegannup about 40 kilometres north-east of Perth at about 12pm (AEST).

Brock, 61, served as an athlete liaison officer for the Australian team at both the Sydney and Athens Olympics.

“I’m shocked and saddened,” said Coates, president of the Australian Olympic Committee.

GM’s Holden unit released a statement which read:

“Holden management and employees today mourned the loss of Australian motor racing legend and one if its favourite sons, Peter Brock.

Peter Brock was a fine ambassador for the Holden brand for almost 40 years as a racing car driver and tireless community advocate.

He leaves an indelible mark on the history of the company.

Holden extends its sympathy to Peter’s family, friends, and his many thousands of fans around Australia and the globe.

Holden also wishes Peter’s co-driver Mick Hone, who was injured in the event, a full recovery.”
