Ford’s
Australian manufacturing operation is asking 300 production workers to take voluntary
redundancy at its plants in Geelong and Broadmeadows in Victoria state.

Ford says it has tried to match output of its Falcon large car range with demand
by giving workers extra days off, but cannot sustain this policy long-term.

The company hopes the redundancies will help it to reduce daily production
from 400 to around 380 units by late April.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) said the job cuts were a
concern. However, a spokesman conceded that job losses were almost inevitable
considering that "the cars aren’t selling".
