Ford Australia is axing about 600 workers from its Broadmeadows car plant near Melbourne, according to reports.

The job losses, which the company hopes to achieve on a voluntary basis by Christmas, follow a cut in production of the locally designed and built Falcon car and Territory SUV models from 450 to 350 units a day announced last month.


The company said at the time that job cuts were likely and it hoped that these would be voluntary.


Local media quoted Ford spokespeople as saying that the automaker planned to continue investing in Australian vehicle design and production and that the job cuts were simply an adjustment of output to meet reduced demand.


High fuel prices have dampened demand for large cars in Australia this year.
