New car sales were slow in April 2014 with volume off 5.2% year on year to 80,710 new vehicles in what was a reduced selling month, owing to significant public holidays, official data showed.

Releasing the April 2014 VFACTS figures, FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said small SUVs were the most resilient segment with sales up 47.5%.

“While total SUV sales rose 4% in April, passenger vehicle sales dropped 8.9%, and light commercial vehicle purchases dropped 8.8%.”

The Toyota Corolla was the top selling car for the month, with 3,315 sales, followed  by the Mazda 3 (3,057, Toyota Hilux (2,574) General Motors Holden Commodore (2,443) and the Hyundai i30 (2,271). 

Toyota remained the overall market leader in April with 18.5% of the market (14,930 sales) followed by Holden (9.9%; 8,010), Hyundai (9.4%; 7,626), Mazda (8.7%; 7,000) and Ford (8%; 6,449 sales).
