The recall, which in Asia the company describes as preemptive, comes on the heels of a series of recalls by Toyota affecting almost 8 million vehicles globally due to faulty accelerator pedals and other defects.
Honda Automobiles (Thailand) Co Ltd said it is recalling 2,760 City models produced in 2008 because there is the danger of a short circuit in the driver’s side master window switch.
Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd also announced a recall of all Honda City models sold in 2008 to replace the defective switch PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), the sole distributor of Honda cars in Indonesia, also is contacting 3,240 local City car owners to rectify the same problem.
The City model is fitted with the same switches used in the Fit/Jazz models sold in Europe and the USA, which were already subject to a recall after two fires in the USA were attributed to short circuits of these switches. “The Jazz/Fit models produced in South-east Asia are not fitted with the same switches”, confirmed Jonfis Fendi – sales director at PT HPM. ”Only the City model is affected”
Separately, Toyota said that its most recent recall of 1.8 million cars worldwide due to defective accelerators does not affect cars sold in South-east Asia.
