Chery is planning an assembly plant in Argentina in a joint project with the local Socma group according to La Nacion newspaper.
The factory will require an investment of US$170m, the newspaper added.

Chery started selling cars overseas in 2002 and is now China’s biggest auto exporter.
Quoting a Socma executive, La Nacion said the Argentine plant would be built in the Buenos Aires suburb of Berazategui with an initial production capacity of 40,000 vehicles a year.
Capacity would rise to 70,000 in a second phase, the report added. Construction would start as soon as financing has been secured.
The Chinese carmaker started construction at a US$400m plant in neighbouring Brazil earlier last week. The company also assembles about 7,000 vehicles a year in Uruguay.
