Argentinean National Automaker’s Federation (Adefa) members produced 23,568 vehicles in August, an increase of 11.2% over the 21.203 vehicles made in July.

Compared with the 15,350 units produced in the same period of 2003 production was up 53.5%.


Last month, automakers sold 28,141 vehicles in Argentina, a rise of 3.6% compared with 27,169 in July, and up 89.2% compared with the 14,874 sold in August 2003.


Only 10,359 of the vehicles sold in Argentina last month were locally made. The government is now considering ways to “protect” the local market from imported cars and to boost production by Argentine automakers.


Volkswagen maintained its market leadership in August with 5,795 vehicles sold for a market share of 20.6%. Ford was second (5,095, 18.1%) and General Motors was third (3,962, 14.1%).


Exports declined a little last month to 12,838 vehicles, a decrease of 1.3% compared with the 13,011 units shipped in July. But this was still an increase of 16.8% over the 9,012 units exported in August 2003.
