Arbe won the award in the Perception Systems category for setting new industry standards in vehicle perception, enabling safer and more reliable advanced driver-assistance and autonomous driving solutions.

Advancing radar resolution in automotive sensing

Arbe’s ultra-high-resolution Perception Radar represents a significant advancement in automotive sensing technology. While traditional automotive radars typically offer up to 200 virtual channels, Arbe’s solution features 2,304 virtual channels, ten times more than leading alternatives. This leap in channel count is made possible by a proprietary automotive-grade radar RF chipset, which includes 48 transmitting and 48 receiving channels and a dedicated radar processor chip. The result is a radar system capable of generating a point cloud with over 100,000 detections per frame, two orders of magnitude denser than any other radar solution currently available.

This unprecedented resolution allows the radar to detect and distinguish between objects with a level of detail that was previously only achievable with far more expensive or less robust sensor technologies. For example, the system can accurately identify the boundaries of vehicles, pedestrians, and other road users, as well as separate stationary objects at long range, such as a lost cargo on the road and the guardrail. The high-definition radar processing chip, capable of handling data rates equivalent to 3Tb per second, ensures that this massive volume of raw data is processed in real-time, supporting both high and ultra-high resolution modes while maintaining low power consumption.

By narrowing the gap between radar and camera-based perception, Arbe’s solution enables robust sensor fusion. This allows for the integration of radar data with camera input, resulting in a more comprehensive and reliable environmental model. Such capabilities are essential for next-generation ADAS and AV systems, where accurate perception is critical for safe navigation and decision-making.

Reliable performance across challenging conditions

Existing perception systems are often limited by challenging weather and lighting conditions. Arbe’s Perception Radar addresses these limitations by delivering reliable detection in scenarios where cameras and LiDAR may be less effective, such as darkness, glare, fog, or heavy rain. The radar’s ability to function reliably regardless of lighting conditions and to perform effectively in adverse weather ensures that vehicles equipped with Arbe’s technology can consistently maintain high perception performance.

This reliability is important for meeting safety standards set by regulatory bodies such as NHTSA and NCAP, and for supporting advanced use cases such as highway autopilot and hands-free driving at full speed, capabilities that are not widely available in current systems. For instance, Arbe’s radar can detect pedestrians at night, overcome light saturation from oncoming headlights, and make critical driving decisions in snow or heavy rain, where camera and LiDAR performance may degrade.

A key differentiator of Arbe’s solution is its ability to provide accurate free space mapping. The radar can distinguish drivable from non-drivable areas with high precision, detect objects at long range in both azimuth and elevation, and separate closely spaced objects even in complex environments. It excels at detecting stationary objects, maintaining detection through partial and full occlusion, and identifying road inclines or changes in drivable surfaces. This level of environmental awareness is essential for L2+ and L3 autonomous systems and higher autonomy, where the vehicle must reliably interpret its surroundings to ensure safety.

By providing a high-definition, independent source for environmental mapping, Arbe’s technology enables the reduction of system complexity and cost. For example, some OEMs expressed interest to remove LiDAR from their sensor suites while maintaining or even enhancing system performance.

AI integration and industry validation

Arbe’s proprietary AI and advanced signal processing capabilities further distinguish its Perception Radar. The system integrates features such as multipath suppression, object classification, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), supporting situational awareness and path planning. The AI-driven approach enables the radar to not only detect objects but also classify them, distinguishing between pedestrians, vehicles, two-wheelers, and larger vehicles such as trucks and buses. It can track objects’ speed, size, shape, altitude, orientation, and turn rate, and predict their future positions, which is critical for safe navigation in dynamic environments.

The radar also generates a detailed target list for sensor fusion, including spatial coordinates, object velocities, and confidence parameters for each detected target. This rich dataset supports comprehensive sensor fusion with cameras, providing a more complete and reliable perception of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Arbe’s technology has received validation from several global OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, including Magna, HiRain Technologies, and Sensrad, for integration into next-generation ADAS and AV platforms. Notable examples include HiRain Technologies’ commercial order for 340,000 radar chipsets for deployment in China, Sensrad’s agreement to supply 4D imaging radars to Tianyi Transportation Technology, and collaborations with European truck manufacturers and leading global OEMs for advanced sensor suite integration. These partnerships, along with commercial orders and strategic collaborations, indicate industry interest and the potential for broader adoption of Arbe’s radar solutions. The ability to replace or reduce reliance on other sensors, such as LiDAR, without compromising safety or functionality, further underscores the commercial and technical impact of Arbe’s innovation.
