A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11967685B2) discloses a battery module designed for electric vehicles. The module includes a plurality of battery cells and an electrical resistance element positioned between the cells to provide heating. The rod-shaped resistance element is made of a polymer composition with a positive temperature coefficient and features four concave sections with surface normal vectors pointing in different directions. This element comes into contact with the outer surface of at least two cylindrical battery cells, with a length greater than the cells' dimensions.

Furthermore, the patent details the composition of the electrical resistance element, which includes various polymers, electrically conductive particles like carbon black or copper powder, and thermally conductive particles such as silicon carbide or aluminum oxide. The resistance element can be connected to a power source to convert electrical energy into heat, ensuring optimal performance of the battery cells. Additionally, the design allows for the element to act as a holder for the battery cells, with open receiving compartments embedded in the holder to securely accommodate the cells. The element also features cooling ducts to facilitate the flow of a temperature control medium to cool the battery cells, enhancing overall efficiency and safety of the battery module for electric vehicles.
