Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 1,657 in Q3 2023, versus 3,528 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 14% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Hyundai Motor filed the most robotics patents within the automotive industry in Q3 2023. The company filed 66 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 55 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Kia with 57 robotics patent filings, Robert Bosch Stiftung (43 filings), and Toyota Motor (40 filings) in Q3 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 34% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q3 2023 was in the US with 34%, followed by China (26%) and South Korea (7%). The share represented by the US was 14% higher than the 21% share it accounted for in Q2 2023.
