We live in strange times. As Fisker, a rival with supposedly superior range-extending technology falls apart, the value of Tesla rises yet again, this time by almost two percent on Wednesday to US$9.7bn.
The EV maker has recently been trumpeting not only the US$11m profit it booked for Q1, but the fact that its Model S has outsold the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 in the US market for the year to date.
It does all appear to be going swimmingly for Tesla, and US taxpayers will be thrilled to hear founder Elon Musk announcing his intention to prepay a loan from the Department of Energy.
All this raises many questions for many analysts. One such is the how Fiat SpA, which produces more than 200 times more vehicles annually than the Silicon Valley upstart, can be worth less at current market values?
