Daimler is expected to announce the change on Tuesday, and also will say chief executive Dieter Zetsche's contract will be extended by three years, as expected. The automaker declined to comment, the reports said.

Sweden-born Kaellenius once headed Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines in Brixworth, England, and worked at McLaren Automotive. He has also worked, in Stuttgart, as a senior manager in engine and exhaust management, among other positions.

Kaellenius started his career with the former DaimlerChrysler at the US Tuscaloosa plant in the planning and reporting division, rising to become manager of the factory. He became managing director of Mercedes-Benz AMG in April 2010. He moved to head Mercedes-Benz Cars sales and marketing in October 2013.
