New vehicle sales in Taiwan declined by 6.2% to 40,103 units in June from peak volumes of 42,751 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by industry sources.
In the first half of the year sales were 2.3% lower at 217,162 units compared with record volumes of 222,209 units in the same period of last year.
The market hit a record high of 440,000 units last year, driven up by a five-year scrappage incentive programme of TWD50,000 (US$1,640) per vehicle. The benefits of this programme are expected to dwindle with time, however.
The performances of the individual brands varied significantly last month with the Toyota, Lexus and Hino distributor reporting a sales fall of almost 10% to 11,864 units – with its market share slipping below 30%.
China Motor Corporation, which sells its own branded commercial vehicles and Mitsubishi sedans, enjoyed a 9.7% volume rise to 4,866 units while Honda's sales rose by 6.8% to 2,467 units.
Yulon Nissan Motor's sales fell by 2.6% to 3,666 units and Mercedes-Benz reported a 1.1% decline to 2,584 units.
