Toyota Motor Corp. celebrated the start of construction of a joint $100 million investment in China, on Wednesday (12/7/00), the first for the company in the country.
Funded equally by Toyota Motor and Tianjin Automobile Xiali Corp., Toyota Chairman Hiroshi Okuda and Tianjin`s Municipal Committee Secretary Zhang Lichang were amongst 300 people present at the ceremony.

The Tianjin car plant plans to make 30,000 of the new 1,300 c.c. model per year from 2002, based on the Vitz small passenger car. It will be sold under the Toyota brand.
