General Motors Europe will transfer production of the current Astra model to its Gliwice plant in Poland, rather than building the redesigned model there, as just-auto reported on Tuesday, a spokesman said on Thursday.

“There is no overlap with the decision to build the current Astra in Poland,” said GME’s Stefan Weinmann.
“In Western Europe, we will switch to production of the new Astra in 2004, and the transfer of current Astra production to Gliwice will consequently not have a negative impact on [German or British Astra plants].
“On the contrary, production of the new Astra in Western Europe is expected to create new opportunities, Weinmann added.
Earlier this week a Vauxhall spokesman said plans to build the ’04 Astra at the firm’s Ellesmere Port plant were proceeding as scheduled.
