Heavy-duty truck maker Tatra has signed a big contract with the Indian government to supply 1,070 trucks by the end of Jan 2003. The order mainly covers truck for military applications and will be carried out in conjunction with Tatra’s Indian joint venture assembly operation.

Media reports in the Czech Republic say that the company will have to re-hire workers dismissed in recent months in order to meet the required production increase.

Overall sales of Tatra trucks could now reach 2,400 units this year according to the company, dramatically reversing the declining trend of recent years. Last year, Tatra sold just 1,604 units, mainly to its traditional customers in Russia, China and India.
