Renault says that it expects to sell more than 10,000 cars in Mexico during 2002, just one year after re-entering the market after a fourteen-year absence. Sales are then projected to double in 2003.

Renault Mexico’s head Patrice Ratti revealed the upbeat forecasts at a press conference reported in the local media. He also said that Renault sold 3,150 vehicles in 2001.

Renault’s position in Mexico has been transformed by the company’s alliance with Nissan and local Nissan factories are turning out two Renault models – the Clio and Scenic – for local consumption.

Around two thirds of Renaults sold in Mexico are Mexican made and the company’s Mexican capacity is being mainly developed to serve the domestic market, in contrast with the export focus of most producers in Mexico.

Renault is seeking to extend parts purchasing synergies between Nissan and Renault in Mexico and Ratti also remarked at the press conference that the company is very pleased with results to date.
