Isuzu Motors will begin producing sport utility vehicles in Thailand next spring, taking advantage of the unused capacity at its existing pickup truck plant, Reuters reported, citing Friday’s Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily, which reportedly said the truck maker would initially build 10,000 to 20,000 SUVs a year for sale in Southeast Asia.

An Isuzu spokeswoman reportedly said the company was considering various options to enable production of more than one type of vehicle at the Thai plant, but added that nothing concrete had been decided, Reuters said.

According to the news agency, the plant last year produced about 90,000 pickups jointly developed with General Motors, which owns 12% of Isuzu, and could build 155,000 vehicles a year.

Reuters noted that Isuzu, which is struggling to return to profit, ended US production of SUVs last year, due to sluggish sales, and has said it would focus more on the fast-growing Asian market for future growth.
