Chinese electric vehicle (EV) startup Nio last announced it had entered into a strategic partnership with China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) to establish a EV battery swapping network in China.
The first of a new generation of EV battery exchange stations, using the Nio Power Swap Station system, would be based at Sinopec’s Chaoying refueling station in Beijing.
Nio said in a statement: “The partnership… is an important milestone to further develop China’s smart EV industry. It is a concrete measure to help achieve peak carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.”
The Nio product was “the world’s first mass-produced battery swap station that allows vehicles to manoeuvre into the station automatically using 239 sensors and four collaborating cloud computing systems that maximise the application of visual recognition technology”.
The company claims users can complete a self-service battery change with one click of a button while remaining in the car. The system is capable of completing up to 312 swaps a day, significantly improving efficiency.
Sinopec said it wanted to have a nationwide network of 5,000 outlets in place by 2025.
