Toyota’s labour union is looking for a JPY6,000 (US$50) rise in monthly base pay at this year’s spring wage negotiations with management, reports the Nikkei Asian Review.
This would be the second year running the union has looked for an increase in light of the company’s strong performance. Toyota is on track to a record JPY2.5 trillion (US$1.75bn) operating profit in the current fiscal year through March 31.

Last year the union demanded a JPY4,000 (US$33.50) increase in base pay, eventually settling on JPY2,700 (US$22.60).
Toyota’s union often sets the pace for wage demands in the Japanese industry and those at the other major automakers will likely also request JPY6,000 increases this year.
Toyota President Akio Toyoda did not comment on the demand, saying only that “wages are to be determined via talks between labour and management.”
