Based upon forecast sales of around 200,000 for the month, the marked improvement in discounts from franchised dealers and vehicle retailers was worth an estimated £49 million extra saving for British car buyers.

The UK motor industry’s 2003 sales target is 2.45 million units and volume models from the likes of Ford, Citroen, Toyota and Renault continue to underpin the downward price trend, CarPriceCheck said.

Although Citroen’s headline grabbing ‘VAT Free’ promotion helped push savings on some models into the 20% plus bracket, the French marque was not alone.

Renault’s Megane-based Scenic is due for replacement in September, so the French firm’s eagerness to clear old stock was addressed with discounts around the 12-15% mark but as high as 22% for some models.

Other key movers during June included the Scenic-rivalling Vauxhall Zafira and the Ford Mondeo, Fiat Stilo, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Corolla.
