Jaguar has unveiled its second generation XF model with a dramatic event involving a high-wire journey in London’s docklands.

The stunt was designed to highlight the new car’s light weight and Jaguar claims it is 80kg lighter than its closest competitor, resulting in best-in-class efficiency (over 70mpg) and CO2 (104g/km). Featuring 75 per cent aluminium, the new architecture enables weight savings of up to 190kg over the outgoing model, Jaguar says.

The new XF will use the same aluminium platform as that of the XE and two other JLR models: the Range Rover L560 and the Jaguar F-PACE. The new XF is also available with four-wheel drive. Engines range from a 2-litre diesel (163PS) to a 3-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine (380PS). Hybrid powertains are also expected to follow.

The XF will be manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Castle Bromwich Plant alongside the all-aluminium F-TYPE and XJ.

Further technical details will be available on April 1 at the New York International Auto Show’s first press day when the car gets its world premier.

The launch stunt took place high over the Royal Dock in London. Footage of the drive can be viewed at jaguar.co.uk/newxf
