Taiwan's new vehicle market enjoyed a strong end to 2019, with sales in December rising by 9.4% to 45,925 units from 41,993 units in the same month of the previous year, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

Total vehicle sales last year increased by 1.1% to 439,836 units from 435,135 units in 2018, driven by strong demand for imported vehicles which increased by 6.4% to 209,949 units from 197,281 units in 2018. Domestically-produced vehicles struggled to keep pace with the overall market, with sales declining by 3.3% to 229,887 units last year from 237,854 units.

Toyota sales rose by over 25% to 119,597 units last year, helped by the recent launch of the new Corolla Altis – the country's best-selling model, and also the new RAV4. Nissan's sales increased by 4.1% to 35,793 units last year; Honda 33,053 (-14.9%); Mercedes-Benz 29,255 (+0.3%); Mitsubishi 24,454 (-8.8%); and China Motor 23,129 units (+3.3%).
