Renault do Brasil will start exporting engines in July to France and Slovenia, writes Rogério Louro Alves.

The engines are made in the São José dos Pinhais engine plant, Paraná state, that was opened at the end of 1999 in the same industrial complex as a passenger car factory and a joint Renault/Nissan pick-up and commercial vehicle plant.

The Brazilian Renault engine plant builds one- and 1.6-litre 16-valve engines to both supply the local vehicle factories and for export to Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and Mexico.

Last year the plant produced 90,000 engines and this year expects to ship 180,000 engines.

Renault wants to reach the factory’s capacity of 400,000 engines per year by 2004.
