Ford’s German arm, Ford-Werke AG, has blamed sluggish demand in the US for the scale of its operating loss – 80 million euros – in 2001. The 2001 result compares with a loss pf 171 million euros in the previous year.
Ford-Werke said that one of its engine factories experienced a loss of 40 million euros due to declining demand from North America.
However, Ford-Werke’s Chief Executive Rolf Zimmermann forecasts an improvement for the current year, saying that the company is on course to book an operating profit in the two-digit million euros region for 2002.
Zimmermann also said that Ford-Werke needs to aim for a market share of 10% both in Europe and in Germany. In 2001, Ford’s share of the German car market was 8.1% and share of the European car market was 8.8%.
