Renault says its plants in Spain are closed today (16 March) and tomorrow as the coronavirus outbreak continues in the country, although its French sites are operating normally.

After Italy, Spain is recording significant numbers of coronavirus cases with Madrid declaring a state of emergency, which has seen transport operating at reduced levels and public gatherings banned.

Shops other than those selling food or other essential items such as pharmacies are closed, as well as many businesses and all schools and universities, according to the UK Foreign Office.

All citizens have been instructed to remain at home except when going about a limited set of activities in particular to buy food or other essential items, to return home to their primary residence, to go to hospital or other health centres, to go to work, if unable to from home, to carry out caring or similar duties or in case of real need.

“Renault is adapting its production resources to the measures taken by governments,” said a statement from the manufacturer sent to just-auto. “To guarantee the safety of its employees and deal with projected absenteeism at industrial sites, the group’s plants are working on different work organisations to ensure business continuity

• Teleworking is mandatory for all persons whose activity allows it

• The group is working on possible business scenarios in the coming days; lower production rates, fewer shifts or even days not worked
